Esoteric Integral Yoga

Find inner balance & harmony, fulfil your true potential, bring yoga to life

What is Yoga?

More than just a normal yoga class, this course is a thorough and deep exploration of the roots of what Yoga truly is…

It is an invitation to realise the true essence of Who you are – the transformation that happens on discovering all the gifts and qualities that usually lie hidden beyond our awareness.

Yoga is a wealth of knowledge and techniques that can become a way of living – bringing harmony and peace on each level of your being: the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

The course provides shifts in perspective both on yourself and on the universe around you, bringing inspiration not only to discover but to live your highest potential – and to thrive!

The Yoga course teaches many things, such as:

  • How to direct your inner resources wisely and efficiently. A yogi is able to consciously choose which qualities to energise, such as mental focus, creativity or love, and to use them for achieving higher goals.
  • To ask the fundamental questions of life such as, ‘Where do I come from?’, ‘What is the purpose of my life?’ and, ‘Who am I?’, to gain a higher perspective on life, and to live with meaning.
  • To become aware of your true nature, and understand the lessons that life offers in every moment.
  • To nurture your own inner sanctuary that always remains, regardless of outer circumstances.
  • To discover the mechanisms behind all phenomena of the universe.

This course is suitable for adults and teenagers over the age of 18

Yoga is the journey
of the self, through the self, to the Self.

The Bhagavad Gita

What makes our
Integral Esoteric Yoga course special?

This course has one goal – your personal transformation through authentic Yoga
Designed for long-term spiritual development

In each class you will receive practical and esoteric knowledge and techniques, that you can also practise at home. You will also receive handouts at the end of each class, with details of each lesson, so you are not limited to only practising in class, and you can develop as quickly as your enthusiasm allows!

The Yoga course is structured in such a way that each class builds upon the last, so that you gradually go deeper and deeper into your practice, with a strong foundational understanding.

This gives you the framework to keep developing and expanding. If you so choose, Yoga is a path of lifelong learning and improvement – of “continuous transformation”.

Supported by science

Where possible, the teachings are explored from a scientific perspective, to the extent to which current technology is capable of measuring results.

Research and findings from biology, psychology, neuroscience, physics (mechanics, electro-magnetic, wave theory) and quantum physics are included as examples of scientific analysis of results in Yoga.

Learning through direct experience

Rather than asking students to have blind faith or belief in the teachings, we encourage all our students to practise with openness and attention to see for themselves.

Some effects are immediately obvious, while others take time to appear. While you may not feel subtle phenomena such as chakras or energy in your first class, such effects can be experienced in time.

The most important factor is whether you notice any transformation in your life and being as a result of your practice.

All the notions presented in the course can be verified through practice and your direct experience.

Practised by people of all beliefs and backgrounds

Tara is not affiliated with any religion. We focus on the underlying spiritual principles that are common to all traditions – despite apparent differences in their practices. Due to this commonality, students who already have a particular faith often find that the tools and knowledge taught in our courses help them go deeper into their current religious or spiritual practices.

With the down-to-earth wisdom of the teachings, everyone can learn and benefit from the classes for more fulfilment and meaning in life – whether you believe in ‘something’ or not!

In-depth Study of Universal Laws & Principles

With a deeper understanding of the way in which the universe works, we can also become aware of how we ourselves work as part of this universe, and how to live in harmony with the underlying principles.

By understanding principles such as the Principle of Resonance, Polarity, Correspondence and Rhythm, we can become wiser, able to see the lessons that are integrated into the experiences of life, which may previously have appeared to be just ‘random’ events. And we can make conscious decisions about how we wish to be in this world.

Emphasis on effects beyond the physical

When we are open to perceive, and take the time to become meditative in a yoga posture or technique, the effects can be felt far beyond the physical body, so that the emotions, thoughts and energies become harmonious.

At Tara, we pay close attention to these effects, looking in detail at the mechanisms behind this, such as the concept of resonance, the chakra system and other subtle structures.

Continual and expansive transformation

Yoga is a system that takes all aspects of life into account, and so the effects of the practice can be vast.

Students transform in numerous ways – from the way they relate to their purpose, the food and entertainment they ‘consume’, the way they breathe and sit, or the environment they create around themselves.

The realisations that result from increased self-awareness vary from person to person. However, with enthusiasm, openness and dedication, we can confidently say that the transformations can be life-changing.

Yoga practice

Initial awareness and warm-up exercises

Simple exercises of awareness and warming up that activate the beneficial subtle energies of both the psyche and the consciousness. These exercises also “warm up” and moderately stretch the muscles, increasing flexibility and gently preparing the body to perform the various yoga poses.

Practice of asanas (yoga postures)

The practice can include asanas, pranayama (taught later in the course), meditation, and other techniques related to the week’s topic. Learn to perceive the specific resonance processes that the practice of each asana triggers, also in the awareness stage for observing the effects that can lead to an expansion of the consciousness and further amplifying of the effects.

The yogic relaxation

The entire physical body is led gradually into a state of deep relaxation, after which you will feel perfectly balanced, relaxed and regenerated.

Some classes may include a short meditation with a music background

Specific meditations with music allow a perception of a specific state or quality, such as the state of humbleness, love, lucidity etc.

Forms of Yoga taught on the course

This Yoga course integrates many traditional forms of Yoga, bringing them into a unique coherence and completion.

Usually one or more of the paths of Yoga call to the individual’s soul most clearly. But there is so much to learn from every path. By studying techniques and principles from each path, we are equipped with a wide variety of tools and perspectives that help in every challenge and opportunity that life brings.

  • Karma yoga

The yoga of action, of service. Fusing with the universal harmony through any action done selflessly, through offering all that that is done towards the highest.
  • Bhakti yoga

The yoga of boundless love and devotion. Elevated feelings allow an openness to experience that which is godly in everything that is done. Opening the heart in states of adoration and reverence bring a direct, emotional experience of union.
  • Jnana yoga

The yoga of study and introspection. Studying sacred texts brings a deep connection to the original authors, and with the inspired and elevated states into which the authors entered when writing the texts. The practice of jnana yoga guides an examination of one’s own mind, to discover the true centre of who we are.
  • Hatha yoga

Physical yoga practice – postures and breathing exercises to harmonise and amplify the masculine, solar, Ha, and feminine, lunar, Tha, energies in the physical body and subtle structures of the being.
  • Raja yoga

The ‘royal’ Yoga of the mind, focuses on amplifying mental powers such as concentration and control over mental agitation, finally bringing about a perfect meditation.
  • Tantra yoga

The yoga of ritual, and the sanctifying of all actions. Tantra Yoga focuses upon awakening and amplifying energy – Shakti, or Kundalini, to its maximum and then using it as ‘rocket fuel’ for spiritual transformation, guided by an equally awakened awareness.
  • Kundalini yoga

The Yoga of awakening, dynamising and controlled ascension of the fundamental cosmic energy, Kundalini Shakti.
  • Laya yoga

The Yoga of merging with the Absolute through meditation with subtle sounds.
  • Mantra yoga

The Yoga of resonating with different subtle energies of the Universe, using sacred words or incantations.
  • Yantra yoga

The Yoga of fusion with energies, or power spheres of the Universe through specific geometric drawings.

FAQs

What is the difference between the Yoga course and the Tantra course?
The Tantra course first and foremost teaches about the idea of embracing life in all its many nuances, bringing a spiritual perspective to every area of life, including relationships, work and home life, all supported by the practice of Yoga. You will also learn techniques for practising forgiveness, to gain willpower, harness erotic energies, awaken intuition and many more. Through the practice of Tantra, life experiences become an opportunity to expand, so that along with the introspective time spent on the yoga mat and meditation cushion, you can achieve great transformations in your being, gradually bringing you closer to your true Self.

In the beginning, the focus of the Yoga course is primarily on yoga techniques, a rich inner work that gradually infuses into the rest of your life. You learn about many different aspects of Yoga such as asanas, purification techniques, diet, as well as different forms of yoga such as Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Hatha Yoga etc. Both the Yoga and the Tantra courses build up step by step, but the Yoga course can feel a little more gradual in its progression, with your practice naturally leading you to develop certain attitudes which enable you to transform your life on the outside too. The Tantra course, on the other hand, can feel more ‘full on’, taking you head first into the intensity of vividly lived life experiences.

Tantra yoga is a branch of Yoga. The Tantra course is therefore a deep dive into this particular path of Yoga, whereas the Yoga course covers many different aspects and forms of Yoga. This is why there is some overlap in the content for around the first 18 months of the courses. They both cover similar foundations, such as some fundamental principles and Yoga techniques, and then develop in later months and years into very different areas.
Why Tara and not the gym?
If someone looks deeper inside at what it is that they truly want when they go to the gym, they will often find that they are looking for much more than just physical fitness and wellbeing. Perhaps they may realise that they are also seeking mental and emotional balance, a sense of purpose, fulfilment, accomplishment, joy, more energy, connection, growth, transformation, peace, worthiness, focus, confidence and so on. Working out can indeed teach many values, and provides many of these effects to an extent. But for complete transformation, a higher perspective of Who we truly are, and How the universe works is fundamental. The traditional Hatha Yoga taught at Tara goes both to the depths of our inner world, and to the principles of the Universe, giving the tools for true harmony in all aspects of your life and being.
Do I have to be flexible to do yoga?
No, this course is not designed with human pretzels in mind

All that is needed is your curiosity and an openness to learn.

More than physical prowess, we place much more emphasis on awareness and state of mind while performing the Yoga postures. By focusing the mind, the effects of the practice are greatly amplified, bringing you the real benefits of Yoga, rather than simply stretching! However, by regularly attending the Yoga course and practising at home, flexibility can improve over time and become a good indicator of your overall well-being.

The Yoga course provides tools and methods that can be applied in all areas of your life – one of which is the physical body, but great attention is also placed on the energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects.
How long is the course?
We see personal evolution as a continuous process, so our courses continue for as long as you wish to keep learning! Some students continue for a few months, while many attend classes for years. If you ask a Tara student, ‘What year are you in?’ you might hear them reply, ‘2nd year’, ‘4th year’, ‘7th year’ or even more! New lessons every week include tools and practices that allow your ever-expanding knowledge to be integrated into your daily life.
Do I need to commit to a year or even the rest of my life?!
No, you can come for as long as you feel the course continues to fuel your curiosity, growth and self-discovery. With our Try Tara pass you can try both our courses for four consecutive weeks. After that, there is a monthly membership for the courses you wish to continue, that can be cancelled at any time – no strings attached!
How do I know that the teachings work?
Our school is full of students and teachers that have been putting our teachings into practice for many years and have seen great results. We don’t ask you to just believe us, however, but rather we encourage you to come with a curious mind and try for yourself. Each week you will be offered suggestions for personal practice, and will be encouraged to measure the transformation in your daily life. We are always keen to hear how you have got on!
Is this a religious course?
No. Tara is not affiliated with any religion. We focus on the spiritual principles that are common to all spiritual traditions, so you will hear references being made to a wide range of different spiritual traditions.
Does it matter if I am religious/atheist/unsure?
No, we welcome people of all beliefs and affiliations.

Due to the common principles that are shared across religions, students of a particular faith often find that the tools and knowledge taught in our courses help them go much deeper into their current spiritual or religious practices.

With the down-to-earth wisdom of the teachings, everyone can learn and benefit from the classes for more fulfilment and meaning in life – whether you believe in ‘something’ or not!
How fast will I see results?
Results are very specific to the individual – everyone has their specific affinities and limitations that affect how fast they transform, as well as the type of transformation they experience. However, by practising frequently – even every day – with an attitude of open curiosity, enthusiasm and optimism, and by being attentive to the transformations that manifest in your life, you will see results much faster than if you practise only in class, or without the inner attitude.
What support is there?
Firstly, your teachers are available to answer questions and give specific advice or guidance in your practice. You will also be in a class of others who are embarking on a journey not dissimilar to your own. Students often become friends and companions, and support each other on many levels.

Secondly, the extensive resource of the course notes which are handed out at the end of each class, as well as our large spiritual library.

Finally, we are a strong spiritual community. Tara has been running in the UK for over 20 years. and there are many teachers and students with a wealth of experience, who have seen peaks and troughs on their own spiritual path as well as that of others. Such a community provides a strong backbone under which all students – new and old – can grow and flourish.
Sounds daunting. What if I don’t feel ready?
We would suggest that you give it a try! You are never obligated to continue the classes if you find they are no longer benefitting you. Our four week Try Tara pass allows you to try both the courses for only £40. So you can attend the courses for a few weeks to get a feel of whether they are right for you.

If you would like to attend just one class, you can do so for £17 in London, and £15 in Oxford. You can buy a single class four times before choosing if you would like to join or not. For the best price, we recommend the Try Tara Pass.
Is this course suitable for beginners?
Yes. Even though this is one of the most comprehensive Yoga courses you will find, it starts from the very beginning. No knowledge or experience is assumed. Given the esoteric nature of the teachings, it is anyway new for most people. We often have beginners and experienced yogis together harmoniously in the same class.
I can’t attend the course from the very beginning, can I join later or do I have to wait until next year?
It’s best if you can start the course from the beginning so that you have a solid foundation for the lessons as you progress through the course. However, the courses remain open to new students for some weeks after they begin, so it is possible to join later if you can’t be there from the start.
If you join later, you can catch up by reading the course notes from previous classes, asking the teachers questions, and we run catch-up sessions from time to time. Also as part of your membership, there is the option to repeat the weeks missed from the first year without extra payment if you continue into year 2.
